The Department of Education and Curriculum Studies (ECS) is one of four departments in the Faculty of Education at UJ. ECS is a dynamic department, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the following fields :

  • Curriculum studies
  • Literature, language and literacy education
  • Sociological and philosophical foundations of education
  • Subject methodologies in Economics Education, Business Studies education, Social Sciences and many others.
  • The Department of Education and Curriculum Studies (ECS) in the Faculty of Education is engaged and dynamic in advancing education as a professional practice and in the field of scholarly enquiry through excellence in teaching, research and community service that promotes freedom, democracy, equality and human dignity.

    ECS requires a professor or an associate professor with a capacity to teach theory in the field of Curriculum Studies, starting on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

    Responsibilities :

  • Teaching curriculum theory at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Post-graduate teaching (Post-graduate Diploma, Honours and Master’s) and supervision of master’s and doctoral students.
  • Supervising student research at Honours, Masters and PhD level.
  • Leading and managing research projects in the field of Curriculum Studies (especially, but not restricted to Curriculum studies).
  • Secure research funding.
  • Mentoring of novice researchers in the field of Curriculum Studies.
  • International collaboration and participation in research projects.
  • Research publications in mostly reputable and accredited journals.
  • Administration related to teaching, supervision, research and community engagement.
  • Initiate funded projects with education departments and NGO’s.
  • Staff development and mentoring of novice academics in the department.
  • Participation in faculty and institutional committee-structures if and when required.
  • Development of modules within blended learning and assessment practices with a focus on decolonisation.
  • Active participation and leadership in projects of the Department of Education and Curriculum Studies as part of the Faculty's community engagement work involving continuous professional training and development at school, district and senior management level.

    Minimum Requirements for Associate Professor in Curriculum Studies

  • An appropriate PhD in Curriculum Studies or a related field.
  • Sustained accredited research output in the field on national and / or international level.
  • Successfully supervised several Master’s and Doctoral students.
  • Appropriate experience in leading research and leadership development projects.
  • Minimum Requirements for Professor in Curriculum Studies

  • An appropriate PhD in Curriculum Studies or a related field.
  • Evidence of extensive and sustained accredited research output in the field of Curriculum studies.
  • A NRF-rating or equivalent.
  • A track record of research project management and procurement of research funding.
  • A track record of post-graduate research supervision.
  • Competencies and Behavioural Attributes :

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal) with high level of proficiency in English.
  • Sound academic writing skills.
  • Teaching and assessment skills.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Knowledgeable in the application of blended learning programmes.
