As specified hereunder, the University has four (4) positions at the level of Distinguished Visiting Professor (DVP) to conduct multi-
disciplinary research involving multiple academic entities and aligned to Industry 4.0. We’re interested in appointing outstanding, locally or internationally renowned, DVPs who’re willing to work between academic entities for instance, an appointment of a DVP with Artificial Intelligence (A.
I.) expertise in the Humanities, Arts or the Social Sciences; our interest is to infuse both hard- and soft-skills relating to Industry 4.0 institutionally
A doctoral degree or equivalent qualification;
Be appointed at the level of a full Professor benchmarked internationally;
Ideally be an A or B rated researcher (National Research Foundation (NRF)), if in the South African university system;
Be an outstanding and innovative researcher whose accomplishments have made a major impact in his / her field
Be recognised internationally as an undisputed leader in their field and / or have received substantial international recognition for their research contributions (citations and impact of their research).
Has a proven track record of multi-disciplinary research activities with clear expertise in Artificial Intelligence or other areas of Industry 4.
0, for instance, relating to ethics and / or the policy / legislative environment;
Have achieved a high volume and quality of research output as evidenced by accredited publications (e.g. journal articles, books, book chapters, accredited publications) other full research publications, artefacts, patents and research grants awarded;
A sustained and proven track record in the scholarship of teaching and learning and attracting, supervising and mentoring postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, taking into account the practices of the relevant field;
Evidence of strong networks and collaboration with international partners, as well as publishing with prestigious international institutions and highly acclaimed scholars;
Collaboration with industry, if relevant;
Scholarly contribution, over an extended period, to the academic enterprise of research, teaching and learning and community engagement.
As this is a visiting appointment eligibility to apply (the primary employer must allow appointments and collaborative / affiliated research outputs with UJ).
Expected Outputs :
Conduct multi-disciplinary research aligned to Industry 4.0 involving different academic entities of the University;
Emphasis is placed on students training particularly at Masters and Doctoral level and UJ affiliated research outputs with emphasis on citations and impacts.
Incumbents are assessed on the number of students trained and graduated in the cycle, citation and impacts of their research and innovation;
Collaboration with international entities in international events such as conferences as well as publishing with international institutions / scientists;
Distinguished Visiting Professors must leverage additional project and programme-based funding (source external funding both nationally and internationally);
Work in the area of curricula design such as developing undergraduate curricula and continuing education programmes (CEPs) in favour of Industry 4.0;
In the case that the applicant is not rated by the NRF, in view of associated funding instruments and stature, the applicant will be strongly encouraged to apply for rating.
Appointment Terms :
Distinguished Visiting Professors are appointed on a five-year contract and are expected to spend about three months a year in South Africa (may be structured following negotiations with the host).
