ABOUT DE BEERS MARINE :

De Beers Marine (DBM) is based in Cape Town, South Africa and is part of the De Beers group. Activities managed include Marine exploration, geophysical surveys, sampling, mining, ship conversion, upgrades and maintenance, large project management, engineering design and mining system equipment builds.

DBM executes industry leading R&D in marine mining practices resulting in the most successful and advanced marine mining equipment and operations globally.

DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB

De Beers Marine requires the services of an R&D Electronic Engineer. The incumbent will be responsible for development and execution of R&D projects and activity within the organization’s R&D framework and portfolio.

The role will operate primarily out of Cape Town offices, but will require some field integration and commissioning in marine diamond restricted areas at sea within Namibia.

The challenges for this position are the development and industrialization and integration of bespoke geophysical, positioning and sonar based visualization systems.

Future challenges will be focused on development of automated / autonomous mining based on these technologies. As such electronic engineering experience along with signal / image processing and machine learning / AI will form the main requirements for an incumbent in this position.

The nature of the work involves innovating or problem solving. The role involves a high degree of individual contribution, and good application at both a practical as well as theory level.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Understand, analyze and improve the effectiveness / efficiency of existing systems as directed
  • Conceptualize, evaluate and develop new systems for marine mining as directed
  • Assimilate knowledge gained into appropriate format, and build competency knowledge base
  • Disseminate technology / know-how (tech-transfer) through reports, presentations, and discussion
  • Support the operational readiness of new systems
  • The incumbent will be required to go to sea as and when required
  • Communicate effectively to all stakeholders including but not limited to peers, management, vessels teams, and the client.
  • Provide support when required to the mining and sampling operational units on R&D type systems.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS / PERSONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Theoretical and practical acumen in electronics, software engineering, signal processing, image processing, machine vision, machine learning, AI.
  • Development experience in some of the following : C++ or C# in Visual studio, Python and MatlabExperience with the application of machine learning for the development of autonomous systems.

    Experience in working with electronic workshop tools and equipment.Experience with subsea electronics would be advantageous.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant Degree / B Tech or Equivalent in Electronic Engineering
  • 3-5 years post qualification engineering experience, coupled with proven R&D experience.
  • General computer literacy in the MS Suite is essential.
  • Medically fit to go to sea, and suitable to obtain Namibian temporary work visa and restricted area permit (RAP).
  • Registered Professional Engineer would be advantageous.
