About the Position
The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF) since 2002.
SAEON is mandated to observe and research ecosystems on land, in coastal regions and the oceans to understand how those systems function and might change over time and space when influenced by socio-
economic driving forces including climate change. We deliver our data online and offer tools, services and advice for informed environmental policy-
making. This position is supported by the DST's Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure (SMCRI) programme.
Marine Biogeochemistry Technician
Based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape) (3 Year renewable contract)
SAEON Elwandle Node, based in Port Elizabeth, requires the services of a dynamic, self-motivated biogeochemistry technician to assist the biogeochemist in the running of the marine biogeochemistry platform (AA3 auto-
analyser; spectrophotometer, carbon analyser, etc.).
Key responsibilities will include :
Assist with samples reception, registration and preparation
Assist with analytical water and glassware preparation
Record, verify and report results
Maintain laboratory instruments and equipment in use
Maintain laboratory records and logs as required
Assist in trouble shooting and problem solving on all instrumentation and tests
Be actively involved in research or method development projects
Write Work Instructions for laboratory tasks and activities as required
Assist with sample collection in the field / at sea if required
BSc Honours / BTech (4 years) in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical oceanography
At least one years minimum related work experience
Ability to perform all laboratory activities, routine and non-routine analyses with accuracy and precision according to standard operating procedures and / or work instructions
Demonstrable knowledge of setting up and maintaining biogeochemical instrumentation, e.g. nutrient auto-analyser, fluorometer, spectrophotometer, etc.
Familiarity with working in a chemistry / biochemistry laboratory is essential
Experience of measuring dissolved nutrients and carbon, and of running a chemical laboratory, would both be advantageous
Experience in data capturing and basic statistical analysis (using MS Excel or R)
Attention to detail
Ability to work both independently in a reliable manner and co-operatively as part of a larger team
Good communication skills
Code B drivers licence
Physical requirements :
The appointed person would be required to : bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods
