Principal Responsibilities :
Oversee and manage the corporate tax compliance and planning, including but not limited to sign-off on all corporate tax issues for the firm, preparation of technical opinions / briefs and checklists for the organisation and ensuring that procedures and processes are in place to manage compliance for the firm
Work with the auditors and the Finance team and produce the tax returns and schedules in the most efficient manner at the same time as the preparation of the annual financial statements (AFS), ensuring that corporate taxation computations in the AFS match the tax returns, through appropriate version controls and strict adherence to deadlines.
Prepare the entries as and when required for tax related accounts and prepare corporate and deferred tax disclosures in the statutory accounts for all the legal entities in Ernst and Young South Africa
Ensure that all corporate income tax requirements, queries and responses required to or from regulatory authorities meets a high quality standard within deadlines established by the firm and / or regulatory authorities, including but not limited to provisional tax returns, VAT returns, PAYE, IRP 5 submissions, compliance with mobility arrangements, etc.
Provide advice, guidance and direction to the bookkeeping department and to review the taxation schedules produced by them to support tax returns;
feedback as appropriate and ensure that schedules are of the appropriate standard and quality to support tax returns
To supervise the preparation of the tax returns, to work with the tax department and obtain an independent review of the tax returns, if regarded as necessary and ensure all items identified are resolved, prior to submission to tax authorities.
Ensure that all tax related payments, including but not limited to income tax payments, PAYE, VAT payments, STC are made on time to avoid penalties and interest to the firm.
Assist the operations team, payroll department, mobility team, HR department and the broader Finance team with taxation queries and opinions
Ensure appropriate understanding of withholding taxes within the team and sign off all withholding tax reconciliations on a monthly basis
Lead the compilation of any objections and taxation appeals that may be required from time to time
Provide a reconciliation of outstanding tax positions, including but not limited to PAYE, Income Tax and VAT with SARS on an ongoing basis
Ensure that all taxation liabilities and risks are appropriately recorded in the company’s’ books
Ensure that all queries raised by SARS are dealt with completely and appropriately, through written correspondence or liaison with the tax offices
Ensure that all taxation matters pertaining to contractors are adequately addressed within the firm
Manage the timeous and accurate submission of the USA Tax returns
Keep abreast of taxation changes that are applicable to the company and provide professional advice and clear communication on all tax related requirements, issues and initiatives to ensure that Finance have a full understanding of the issues, requirements and impact.
To develop and awareness of taxation risks, if any, of the firm’s underlying accounting, policies and procedures and to recommend and implement changes, if necessary.
To manage the tax returns process for the Partner Group and to ensure compliance within SARS requirements and deadlines
Lead the organisation in terms of structuring of transactions, processes and activities to ensure tax efficiency and compliance.
Keep abreast of all technology changes at tax authorities and lead the change, implementation and execution within the firm, including but not limited to SARS e-
filing, electronic IRP5 submissions
Responsible for the effective management of staff in the tax function, if required, which includes recruitment, motivation, coaching, development and performance management in order to ensure that the unit has staff with necessary knowledge and skill to deliver business objectives for the tax function
Liaise with EMEIA Tax and the internal client serving tax function, for tax advice, to ensure consistency of approach and share best practice and adapt and implement relevant EMEIA policies, concepts, initiatives and practices, specific to the tax function
Develop an understanding of all transactions that have a cross border tax impact and ensure tax compliance in respect of all such transactions with the appropriate tax authorities
Prepare technical briefs (white papers) in respect of how cross border transactions can be structured to ensure tax compliance and efficiency to the broader organisation and drive implementation thereof
Formalise and report any known tax related transgressions across the sub area to the Finance Director and the Chief Operating Office as and when discovered and design and implement solutions to avoid any future repetition of such events
Develop a commercial understanding of the impact of Non-resident Tax, withholding taxes and other taxes across the sub area that are relevant to charges from EMEIA, and communicate professionally and clearly to stakeholders in order to build a case for change within the sub area
Act as a sub area point for contact for the EMEIA team and to drive the execution of EMEIA led initiatives and requests with regards to tax matters Key Competencies : Execution focused
