  • To develop and implement Standard Bank Group external communications strategy and narrative framework. To ensure the development of policy and governance processes and measures, and maintain and protect Standard Bank Group reputation through appropriate issue response and approval of all external communications across media platforms.
  • Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities Client :

  • Conduct forecasting and trend analysis on public discourse and sentiment on matters material to the business (eg Industry 4.
  • 0, Climate change, Equality and Gender issues, Responsible Investment).

  • Engage with the leadership to deploy and operationalise Corporate narrative and key messaging on an ongoing basis.
  • Integrate content management across the group by overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the Standard Bank Newsroom, which is the nexus for the impact on the Group's reputation and serves as the integration point to enable alignment.
  • Supervise the integrated Standard Bank (master) narrative that will drive the Bank's reputation with the media and external stakeholders, through a complex process of co-ownership by the CORE steering committee, business leadership, marketing and communication fraternity.
  • Curate and develop content to translate and contextualise the Group's strategy and value drivers for external stakeholders in a South African and regional (Africa) context.
  • Develop, maintain and implement a layered key message framework catering for a hybrid of business lines, and geographies, in direct support of the master narrative.
  • Develop content for, and oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of external communication campaigns that help land the Standard Bank narrative.

    Account for the perception created of Standard Bank in the media and online. Plan and deploy the Group's corporate narrative, by identifying strategic opportunities for this narrative to be landed within the context of the Group Reputation Framework.

  • Generate a quarterly calendar of proactively identified opportunities and conduct the planning of these.
  • Coordinate the work of partner agencies, to ensure impactful communication and return on investment in the form of reputational and commercial benefits.
  • Respond swiftly and appropriately to stakeholder issues as they emerge, enabled by proactive environmental and media scanning.
  • Conduct an annual materiality assessment on external stakeholder issues.
  • Influence and manage the Group's media engagement processes and systems to ensure a relationship with the media conducive to reach wider audiences.
  • Coach the leadership about the Media and ensure ongoing relationship management to safeguard leadership profiling.
  • Facilitate cross-functional and cross-country collaboration.
  • Manage the relationships with communication agencies to enable Standard Bank to benefit from partnerships.
  • Financial Management

  • Account for financial management and the attainment of financial objectives.
  • People :

  • Recruit, develop, lead and manage a team of communication practitioners in accordance with the Human Capital policy, procedure and guidance.
  • Resource external communication efforts through partnering with Business Line Management teams in view of the Group strategy, Business Line objectives and initiatives with an impact on reputation.
  • Integrate seamlessly with internal communication efforts and online reputation management.
  • Risk, Regulatory, Prudential & Compliance :

  • Develop strong process solutions to govern the integration and coordination of external communication initiated by Group, Business Lines and Corporate Functions and marketing in the same domains.
  • Provide Centre of Excellence governance and support to countries across Standard Bank's footprint.
  • Influence Standard Bank's issue management processes and practices and take decisions on the issue response to the media and external stakeholders.
  • Facilitate strategic advice and counselling of the business on how to build trust and stakeholder confidence during a crisis / current issue (eg. Covid 19)
  • Deploy a generalist communication skillset with the objective of using media relations, media communication and PR opportunities to drive commercial value and safeguard against reputation risk.
  • Manage the processes in Standard Bank to document issue management and tracking.
  • Supervise the management of processes, databases, technologies and other key strategic resources required in effective external and media communication efforts.
  • Strategy :

  • Develop an external communication strategy for Standard Bank Group that differentiates the Group, positions the brand, and enhances stakeholder trust / SBG reputation.
  • Manage the complexity of Group, Business Line, South Africa, and other Country strategies in the context of the M&C strategy.
  • Provide clarity of strategic focus steering proactive planning across the Group.
  • Analyse Media as channel, and media representatives as stakeholders in a South African, and international, context, as input into strategy development.
  • Conduct analysis of what will drive the SBG's reputation with external stakeholders as well as opportunities that exist to position the Group in accordance, as input into strategy development.
  • Maintain a good grasp on the material issues for the Financial Services Sector globally and strategic thinking as to how to leverage the up and down-side risk inherent in these issues.
  • Account for M&E capability that report on external communication effectiveness and media coverage / share and quality of voice in the context of reputation excellence.
  • Assimilate SBG narrative into that of the business priorities; ensuring consistency and integration at the critical points where the Group's reputation comes into play.
  • Maintain an always-on approach to the deployment of the narrative, specifically when it comes to positioning the Group on each of its strategic pillars and value drivers.
  • Preferred Qualification and Experience Post Graduate Degree : Public Relations, Business Commerce, Communication, Corporate Governance or related field Other Minimum Qualifications, certifications or professional memberships : Membership to IABC / PRISA, Certificate courses in Media writing and management;
  • Corporate governance, Reputation management, Certificate in project management, Ethics Officer, Qualification in Integrated Reporting Standards (ESG embedded), Qualification in Business Ethics, Social Media Optimisation, Stakeholder Management, or Content Marketing Experience : 12- 15 years' exp with 5 years in a Corporate Communication leadership role, preferably in a FS context.

    Excellent business acumen and FS sector literacy.Understanding of the full comm mix. Ability to develop and implement comms programmes, campaigns and plans.

    Experience of leader-stakeholder engagement, writing for media and internal comms channels, and planning for successful media relations non-negotiable.

    At least 3 years' experience in managing several large agencies on Knowledge / Technical Skills / Expertise
