Job purpose :

The Medical Scientific Liaison (MSL) acts as a conduit of information about new research developments, clinical trial activities and therapeutic approaches for Amgen South Africa.

The MSL role is to ensure the effective commercialization of products / services and achievement of the company's business objectives based on sound clinical and ethical principles.

The MSL travels often, works intensively with people at every step of the therapeutic product development process and translate dense, academic information into engaging, persuasive scientific and clinical messages.

Responsibilities

Cultivating and maintaining relationships with academic researchers

Provide support to ongoing clinical studies and Investigators

Mapping out OL engagements for new therapeutic area

Provides input to the regional functional team (Scientific Communications Managers, IC RML Medical Excellence Lead, TA Regional Leads)

Develop, implement and ensure execution of local SEP as guided by line Manager

Responsible for budget planning and tracking

Ensure timeous completion of ALIGN

Support R&D efforts for General Medicines development and provide input into feasibilities

Work closely with local CRO and attend Site Initiation Visits (SIVs)and training

Providing scientific support in the marketing of new therapeutic products to physicians and other healthcare professionals

Conduct educational programs to improve medical practice (CMEs, roundtables)

Scientific study site support for ASTs (Amgen Study Teams)

Scientific presentations to physicians and hospital departments

Presenting information to pharmaceutical brand teams

Close collaboration with local Medical Information Manager / Medical Communication Manager

Field feedback : scientific trends, key insights, ongoing studies, CI

Attending conferences and meetings both locally and internationally

Local and international travel

Research proposals

Study feasibility and site selection support

Scientific study site support for ASTs

Decision making Authority :

Skills / Knowledge / Experience / Education Required

The knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of this position are typically acquired through the following combination of education, experience and knowledge or the equivalent.

Education :

  • Higher academic education (University degree)
  • Competencies : Interpersonal skills

    Interpersonal skills

    Identifies, develops and maintains collaborative relationships with current and future OLs, scientific experts, cooperative study groups and study sites

    Strong communication (verbal, written), interpersonal, and listening skills.

    Effective negotiation and decision making skills.

    Develops and implements local OL Plans, in line with local and international OL strategy

    Represents Amgen Medical department in the territory

    Discusses scientific value messages, clinical outcome and patient benefits with OLs, hospital pharmacists and local payers in close collaboration with KAM / access group

    Implementation of the DAI model at all times

    A high affinity for teamwork in order to work with customers, partners, and colleagues

    Works with development field operations to ensure prioritization of trial site selection, and support feasibility across assigned territories

    Understand clinical research and the process of pharmaceutical product development, and approval.

    Understands the pharmaceutical regulatory environment.

    Ensures conduct of work in line with compliance regulations

    Understand trial / referral networks and identify enrollment barriers

    Participates in investigator meetings according to approved investigator strategy

    Implements and follows up on ISSs and other scientific activities, provides input to the design of local observational research

    Supports ASTs on site with scientific presentations / discussions to create enthusiasm for the scientific program,

    Leadership and influence to drive process improvements.

    Identifies new research opportunities

    Gives clinical and scientific presentations at sites / hospitals

    Ensures society engagement : RML support of international and regional congresses

  • Implements and disseminates high quality medical and scientific educational programs;
  • Delivers targeted internal training for selected topics (e.g. study update, congress news, latest scientific developments)

    Supports Head RML / local TA Leader &Medical Manager in developing local territory R&D tactics

    Develops required qualitative and quantitative reports; collates competitor information

    Broad and thorough understanding of Cardiovascular therapeutic area including applicable research initiatives, on-going studies and a comprehensive product knowledge.

    Strong organizational and self-management skills, including computer skills

    Ability to multi-task consistently

    Comfortable working in a frequently changing environment

    Organized and work well cross functionally and globally

    Minimum Requirements :

    Minimum 5 years of experience in industry

    Experience in sales force, affiliate Medical Department or Clinical Development

    Willingness to travel

    Experience with clinical study management and conduct

    Experience with scientific affairs business processes

    Management of complex projects

    Experience in cross functional teams

    Experience in international work streams

    Fluent in both local language and in English (both oral and written)

    Preferred Requirements :

  • Advanced degree (e.g. PhD, MD) preferred or strong demonstration of equivalent combination of relevant educational and professional training
