Job Summary :
To provide executive leadership and effective coordination in the management of the Companys underwriting, marketing, business development and claims activities in the designated countries of the Southern Africa region in accordance with the Groups Underwriting Manual and within the confines of applicable legislation.
To support the Managing Director, especially through the jobholders contribution to the Companys Executive Committee, in the effective management of the Company and to provide executive guidance and effective coordination in the management of the Companys Analytics Department.

Primary Responsibilities :
Provide leadership to the team of Treaty and Facultative underwriters in soliciting, winning and evaluating business offers from existing and potential cedants and brokers within the limits set by applicable legislation as well as by the Companys Underwriting Manual, operating guidelines, administrative memoranda and other policy documents in force;
Provide technical leadership, guidance and reasoned judgment to the underwriting and marketing function in assessing and accepting / declining business offers, and to ensure that such assessments and related decisions conform to the Underwriting Manual, follow sound business considerations, promote profitability and business growth, and are suitably documented for ease of reference;
Provide leadership, reasoned judgment and supervisory review in the development, maintenance and / or release of adequate reserves to meet the outstanding obligations of the Company in respect of its underwriting operations;
As a member of the Executive Management team, contribute to the proper management and control of the affairs of the Company, as well as to the development, implementation and review of strategic, business and operational plans and budgets for the Company subject to appropriate executive, Head Office and / or Company Board approval;
Prepare and, upon proper approval (by Management, Group Management and the Company Board), implement marketing and business development plans on an annual basis, with quarterly reports and reviews to ensure overall effectiveness;
Provide technical input into the claims management process; review and approve claims payment requests in accordance with the business (treaty / facultative) terms and as provided in the Underwriting Manual;
Provide effective supervision to the Companys Analytics Department and ensure coordination of its activities with other departments, with the regulators and with the Group;
Ensure the timely rendition of all required reports (especially those relating to the underwriting and marketing function) to the Head Office in the form and manner so required and as an accurate reflection of the performance and standing of the Companys underwriting and marketing activities, business prospects and state of affairs;
Support the Managing Director in the discharge of his statutory duties as defined by the applicable legislation affecting the Company;
ensure proper records of the activities of the Company are kept as well as ensure timely and accurate rendition of all required statutory reports is made at no avoidable costs to the Corporation;
ensure the Corporations status through the Company as a licenced reinsurer is in no way jeopardised; and ensure full compliance with all applicable laws governing the activities of the Company as a licenced reinsurer under the laws of the Republic of South Africa;
Promote the image of the Company and the Corporation as a responsible business operator and corporate citizen and effect proper and appropriate representation for the Company and / or the Corporation as may be assigned by the Managing Director;
Provide the information, reports or advice required to guide the Managing Director and the Board of Directors in the performance of their duties as may be specified by them or as considered appropriate, and give effect to the decisions of the Board of Directors relating to assigned areas of responsibility;
Manage data, other information resources and other assigned assets of the Company with the highest levels of professionalism, competence, diligence and confidentiality;
Participate in developing and providing required routine and ad-hoc reports, and in monitoring project implementation, employee training and other initiatives to grow the business, improve procedures and enhance productivity, within established company policies and procedures;
To be courteous, patient and tactful always, and to exercise the highest standards of diligence, professionalism and customer care;
To take full responsibility for assignments, working largely without direct supervision, and managing and prioritising own workload; and
Undertake any other activities that may be assigned by the Managing Director and / or the Board and / or the Group Management.
Qualifications, Experience and Personal attributes :
Minimum of a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Economics, Risk Management, or any related discipline;
Minimum of fifteen (15) years relevant post-qualification experience, ten (10) years must have been in an Underwriting & Marketing / Operations & Claims / Business Development positions, with at least seven (7) years as Chief Underwriting & Marketing / Business Development Officer, Chief Operating Officer and / or C-Level Executive Position holder, preferably in the reinsurance industry, insurance industry, and / or financial services sector;
Professional qualification of an internationally recognized association (CII, IISA, IFoA, ASSA, etc.) is required;
Relevant working exposure in a multicultural environment for at least five (5) years in the African context;
Experience in the reinsurance / insurance Industry is necessary;
Involvement with the development and / or implementation of the new regulatory framework in South Africa;
Fluent in one of the two working languages of the Corporation (French or English). A good knowledge of both languages will be an added advantage;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as Office 365, SharePoint, Teams;
Basic knowledge of enterprise resource planning solutions such as Oracle E-Business Suite;
Excellent customer relationship management skills and demonstrated positive image in the markets served by the Company;
Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills;
