Requirements :

  • LLB Degree (Required)
  • Admitted Attorney or Advocate (Required) - (Registered with any recognized legal board or association)
  • Master’s Degree in Law (Advantageous)
  • 5 to 6 years’ experience in a legal environment
  • Solid understanding of the court processes
  • Driver’s License
  • Clean Criminal Record
  • Duties :

    Provide Legal Advice and Opinions

  • Consultation with relevant department on legal opinion required
  • Peruse agreements / contracts and provide opinions on acceptability & appropriateness
  • General legal support and substantive legal advice to the operations
  • Practical business approach to legal matters
  • Effective litigation strategy for the business
  • Attend to all correspondence required in providing legal advice and opinions
  • Drafting and Vetting of Legal Agreements

  • Draft legal and policy documents and amend some when required
  • Draft standard template for agreements
  • Draft and / or review leases and SLA’s & all agreements attached to services & products
  • Liaise with external legal counsel when work is outsourced
  • Facilitate signing of legal agreements and explain content
  • Manage Collection of Loans

  • Instruct Attorneys to handle defaults and facilitate quick turnaround time and keep legal costs low in line with policies
  • Accurately prepare monthly and quarterly report on defaulting and paying clients including the litigation report on the handed over matters
  • Prepare paperwork for submission to external counsel and follow up
  • Follow process for defaulters into default letter; lawyer action, litigate on loans that are outstanding
  • Compliance with legislative / Statutory requirement

  • Monitor developments in all legal aspects affecting the organization’s operations
  • Conduct advance research on all aspects affecting the organization operations
  • Provide strategic direction on new legislation as well as guidelines on the interpretation and implementation of such legislation
  • Minimize Legal Risks

  • Conduct audits and identify legal risk areas
  • Recommend mitigation of risks
  • Lead and implement process of reducing legal risks
  • Manage organizational risks in compliance with the strategic risk register and operational risk register
  • Maintain Contracts Register and Register of external legal advice obtained

  • Establish and maintain contracts register, including letters of appointment for service provider
  • Ensure that all the terms of a contract have been met before recommending payment to service provider
  • Quarterly reporting on status of the contract’s registers
  • Manage organizational Litigation

  • Attend to all legal correspondence
  • Follow approved procurement policy and establish a panel of attorneys
  • Maintain regular contact with panel of attorneys
  • Review panel of attorneys at the end of every year
  • Liaise with external attorneys and prepare comprehensive briefs to counsel, where required
  • Management of intellectual property portfolio and processes

  • Brief IP attorneys on trademark and domain name registrations and disputes
  • Ensure that IP register is compiled and maintained in required manner
  • Conduct IP audit
  • Budget Preparation

  • Prepare an annual budget
  • Report on variances to the CFO
  • Approve expenditure in line with policies
  • Management Information / Reporting

  • Compile monthly update and status report for submissions to the Managing Director
  • Ensure pro-active problem-solving and decision making
  • Ensure validity of statistics
  • Secretary duties

  • Convening and servicing annual general meetings (AGM) / meetings (producing agendas, taking minutes; conveying decisions etc)
  • Providing support to committees & working parties such as the Board of Directors etc.
  • Implementing procedural / administrative systems
  • Handling correspondence before and after meetings
  • Ensuring policies are kept current, are approved, and that company members are aware of their implications
  • Consolidating secretarial reports / board reports
  • Collating information
  • Providing legal / financial advice during and outside of meetings
