Are you ready for the next step in your career? We are looking for the Chief Financial Officer for all of South Africa.

The South Africa CFO is a meaningful role which leads the CFO group in South Africa, based in Johannesburg. The group has 5 staff (including the CFO) and is responsible for all financial reporting and control of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch South African legal entities and businesses.

The role reports functionally into the EMEA Controller, a Managing Director based in London and from a local perspective, the Chief Executive.

The CFO role will be very much a hands on’, execution related position and will be responsible for the daily functional finance accountabilities and responsibilities.

This includes an important element of leading the Finance team, ensuring that the required tasks are executed in an effective, efficient and sustainable manner.

You will Lead the SA Finance team and ensure the right team is recruited, developed and retained by being appropriately coached and developed in the skills required.

You will be adaptable and flexible, the role is also likely to require you to assume broad responsibilities.

You shall be employed by Merrill Lynch South Africa Pte Limited ( MLSA’) (a South African legal entity) and will play a key role in the development of the Johannesburg office and is part of the South Africa management team, representing MLSA on all financial matters.

You will need to liaise with a number of other partners, both within the Finance function, the lines of business and other control functions.

You will also need to interact with external parties including Auditors, Regulators and Tax Authorities. Developing a detailed understanding of the business and operations of MLSA will be key to success of the role.

Key Responsibilities include :

  • Day to day financial management of BAML South Africa country activities
  • Ensuring sound financial supervision and risk management practices are in place across all local legal entities
  • Exercising discernment and influence to ensure appropriate balance between business strategy and risk management controls
  • Legal Entity Controller - Financial Control / Management : Management of the legal books and statutory account preparation / publications for the local legal entity (MLSA)Management of trading book controls for the South Africa based trading booksLeading month end firm-
  • wide close for the South Africa legal entitiesHandling local accounts payable function and all SARS returnsInteraction with / Management of the key external partners such as the external auditors and others.

  • Regulatory Control / ManagementManagement of all financial regulatory reporting and processes to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) as required for all local entities as well as primary liaison with the South African Revenue Service (SARS)Acting as primary point of contact for all external financial and regulatory reporting audits and exams
  • TaxationTax planning and co-ordination with various partners and Group TaxCo-ordination and implementation of firm- wide and local initiatives and projects
  • Implementation of Firm wide projects for the local legal entities in coordination with various Group stakeholders / resources

  • What are we looking for?

    Skills and Qualifications :

  • Qualified Accountant with Financial Services experience
  • A graduate degree in accounting, finance or business (or equivalent experience)
  • Training with a major public accounting firm would be helpful
  • Significant and relevant finance / management accounting experience gained within a regulated financial services institution, preferably within a corporate & investment bank
  • Previous people management or supervisory experience
