Mission / Core purpose of the Job :

  • To design, develop and maintain applications using primarily the Progress 4GL programming language and database toolset Key Tasks (no particular order of sequence) :
  • Investigate and write 4GL code to fix reported application defects
  • Write code to create GUIs as required by business the business in line with technical specifications
  • Write code to maintain and optimise database performance as required
  • Assess requirements for new features and enhancements to applications & databases
  • Gain detailed knowledge of general systems architecture and functionality
  • Design new features and enhancements for applications & databases
  • Defining and developing technical specifications to meet systems' requirements in collaboration with project team members
  • Analyse and translates requirements to create technical designs.
  • Ability to define functional and technical specifications where required
  • Assesses detailed designs and documentation to ensure alignment with business requirements
  • Analyse, design, code, test, correct, and document moderate to highly complex programs to ensure optimal performance and compliance
  • Review, analyse, and refine requirements and specifications to ensure quality
  • Develop and maintain system documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Installation of software systems and patches
  • Defines interfaces among systems components to ensure interoperability
  • Test application fixes in controlled and live environments
  • Test, maintain and recommend software improvements to ensure strong functionality and optimization
  • Preparation of training manuals for users
  • Maintenance of systems once they are up and running
  • Propose new ideas for system improvements, including cost proposals
  • Understanding of 3rd party development technologies and report design
  • SDLC support and integration into aspects where and when required
  • Responding to and dealing with customer, executive and operational staff communication by email, fax and telephone
  • Ensuring all customer and internal staff queries are resolved timeously
  • Participate in the solution design process (business case development)
