CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The purpose of this position is to hire an experienced sociologist who can teach in the area of Social Policy with a preferred focus on contemporary questions and current concerns in rural demography and socio-economic development in the context of state governance, macroeconomic and fiscal frameworks.
We are looking for a candidate who brings research experience on current questions of rural sustainability and development with an understanding of how these are shaped by social policy approaches within our structural, governance and sociological realities.
The candidate must demonstrate that their work has the potential to re-invigorate our understanding of Social Policy and rural sociological questions in the contemporary period.
The candidate must have a sound academic rooting in core Sociological Theories and Research Methods and have a knowledge of concepts, debates and frameworks within African Sociological thought.
Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD;demonstrable experience in quantitative methodologies provided they satisfy the overall scholarly focus for the post.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level
Facilitate transformation of curriculum content at undergraduate and postgraduate level
Conduct research, attend academic conferences, administer courses, and publish to improve the research profile of the faculty
Supervise Masters and PhD candidates
Collaborative team member who contributes towards Sociology curriculum revitalization
In-depth knowledge of foundational areas of Sociological theoretical approaches
In-depth knowledge of the field of Social Policy
Track record of research in contemporary questions of rural social demography and socio-economic development
Ability to incorporate Interdisciplinary approaches into Sociology teaching and research
Ability to teach, manage and conduct assessments for large undergraduate classes
Ability to facilitate teaching and learning via different online platforms
Teaching and research capability towards a transformed Sociology and Humanities curriculum
Demonstrable familiarity and investment in contributing to rethinking conceptual sociological knowledge in South Africa
Ability to work under pressure and cope with the complex demands of the dynamic higher education landscape
Ability to work independently as well as co-operatively within an academic team setting with members that have diverse perspectives and differing academic approaches
Advanced experience in teaching at undergraduate and supervising postgraduate studies
Professional self-management and the ability to operate collegially and competently within the complexities and challenges of the South African higher education environment
Demonstrable track record in using both quantitative and qualitative methods will be an advantage
For Lecturer : MA in Sociology. Preference will be given to candidates who can provide official proof of Phd close to submission.
For Senior Lecturer : PhD in Sociology or cognate Social Sciences discipline with track record in Sociology teaching and research - with specialisation in Social Policy and Sociological Theory
Minimum 3-5 years of undergraduate and post graduate teaching experience
Proven research publication record in accredited scholarly journals in the preferred fields
Proven record of successful supervision at post graduate level
Candidates will be required to furnish three references
