The Medical Research Council, South Africa’s premier organization for undertaking and funding health research, is seeking to appoint a specialist scientist in its Health Systems Research Unit (HSRU).

It is seeking a self-motivated specialist scientist, who is committed to building their research career path by working with a multi-

sectoral team of researchers.

The specialist scientist should aim to build a research career in the maternal, family and child health (MFCH) focal areas of HSRU.

  • The role of a specialist scientist is to disseminate knowledge through peer reviewed articles, conference presentations and books or book chapters;
  • to establish own research niche through grant writing; project management and capacity development of junior staff and students.

    The incumbent will work with the Mphatlalatsane project team and with national and international stakeholders on the Mphatlalatsane quality improvement project to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health.

    He / she will need to supervise and mentor junior staff within the SAMRC MFCH team, and to build research capacity nationally for MFCH through the Mphatlalatsane project.

    The incumbent will need to work within the SAMRC MFCH team that includes four other specialist scientists; will need to undertake leadership role, and will need to share responsibilities for deputising for the overall lead of the MFCH team, as needed.

    Minimum experience and skills : Proposal writing including PI or co-PI on a research project Income generation - research grant of approximately R600 000 Developing data collection instruments and standard operating procedures Quantitative data analysis Managing project budgets and data systems.

    At least three first-authored peer-reviewed scientific publications At least 5 peer reviewed publications in ISI-accredited journals 2 oral presentations at international conferences At least 3 reviews of papers for ISI-

    accredited journals Core Requirements : PhD or equivalent (Medical fellowship) in one of the focal areas of the HSRU Advantageous : At least 10 years experience in health systems research and Training in advanced quantitative methods, including handling of cohort data A salary in the region of R820 660 per annum, cost-
