SUI / / The post is positioned within the Africa Centre for Scholarship (ACS) and will include responsibilities across the Stellenbosch University International (SUI) Division.

SU International is a professional support service division within the responsibility area of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor : Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs.

SUI contributes to the institutional objectives and supports all faculties with their internationalisation activities, as well as developing scholarship in Africa.

The Division is responsible for international partnership development, staff and student mobility, and scholarship development on the continent.

The Africa Centre for Scholarship, within SU International, promotes and develops scholarship through its capacity development activities in the African Doctoral Academy and the Emerging Scholars Initiative.

Furthermore, the Africa Centre for Scholarship, together with other Centres in the SU International Division, utilises different online modalities extensively through the use of the institutional digital platform at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Programmes at SU International requiring the services of the Online Learning Designer and Coordinator include (a) African Doctoral Academy (b) Emerging Scholars Initiative (c) Global Engagement programmes for international students, and (d) courses offered by the PeriPeri U network for disaster risk management.

Through these programmes and services, SU International seeks to promote the learning experience of students and scholars on the African continent and beyond in their pursuit of quality academic programmes.

  • Various modes of online learning are utilised within the programmes which include : blended learning support provided for face-to-face classes;
  • an augmented version of blended learning where delegates could participate either face-to-face or virtually, fully online classes and hybrid learning which at SU is a mode of academic course delivery that combines short periods of face-to-face contact time at the beginning and the end of learning with significant periods of student online learning.

    SU International is expanding its online learning offerings and requires an energetic, innovative and creative Online Learning Designer and Coordinator.

  • The Online Learning Designer and Coordinator will support programme teams in SU International in the planning, design and development of various modes of online learning offerings;
  • implementation and training of presenters and support teams; as well as quality assuring, monitoring and evaluating these offerings to achieve high-quality online and blended learning experiences that form part of selected SU International programmes or modules.

  • Leading the development of an overall online learning strategy for the Division alongside centre directors and managers;
  • Contributing to annual and programme planning, including the training of Blended Learning Coordinators (BLCs) and Classroom Assistants (CAs) as part of planning;
  • Working with the various Centre Programme teams to conceptualise learning design and multimedia development briefs for new blended and online courses and webinars;
  • Co-designing high-quality online learning experiences that are aligned with course outcomes and the intended assessment strategy;
  • Working with facilitators / presenters / academics and other project stakeholders to complete courses according to the agreed-upon curriculum design approach and completing tasks within project timelines;
  • Developing templates for the online modules, courses, and quality assurance;Quality assurance of online platforms, learning tools, the implemented curriculum, and teaching and learning practices;
  • Reporting back to the relevant programme managers on their progress of course design (from context analysis before the course, to critical evaluation after implementation);
  • Identifying opportunities for skills development and continual learning within course support teams (BLCs and CAs);Helping to establish and formalise appropriate workflows within the team;
  • Liaising with the multimedia production team, including the production coordinator, on the multimedia design briefs and quality checks of multimedia outputs (such as videos);
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the status and outcomes of courses in collaboration with programme managers and coordinators;
  • Providing training and support for academics and other stakeholders in preparation for online facilitation (e.g., orientation sessions for facilitators, delegates, as well as BLCs and CAs);
  • Identifying, allocating and managing BLC / CA / School assistants to the various programmes, and collecting insights from them for reporting.

  • A relevant bachelor's degree or a relevant three-year tertiary qualification, in a field related to learning design, for example, education, social sciences, computer science / information systems / web development, graphic / web design;
  • At least three years' experience in the educational use and technical support of learning management systems (e.g., Moodle);
  • Two years' relevant work experience in a teaching-learning, education, or adult training context;Experience in designing visually attractive course layouts that are easy to navigate, based on an understanding of how multimedia principles inform user / learner experience;
  • Experience in curriculum development for the online, higher education or online, adult education content. This should include experience in liaising with subject matter experts to develop high quality learning material collaboratively;
  • An interest in the field of adult and higher education, and an awareness of seminal learning design theories and / or frameworks;
  • Excellent written skills (i.e., proven ability to write good instructive and educational material) and good verbal communication skills;
  • An understanding of quality assurance (QA) processes for online / blended curricula. This should include a general understanding of QA principles, as well as practical experience in online course review, for continual improvement;
  • Proven ability to successfully perform multiple tasks whilst adhering to budgetary and timeline constraints;Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of working in a team (the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively but should also be able to meet deadlines and work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment);
  • A high level of attention to detail. Evidence of accredited training specifically in the field of learning technologies and online learning design;
  • Online teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience;Basic graphic design, video and audio editing experience;Evidence of continued development / training regarding technology-enriched learning;
  • A background in accessibility, usability and experience design, information design, or communications design.
