Shift Supervisor

Owned by Rio Tinto and located in the KwaZulu Natal province, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) is an internationally recognized sand mining and mineral processing operations leader and is one of the world's foremost producers of titanium minerals, high purity pig iron and zircon.

The company has implemented a sound corporate social development programme and an internationally recognised environmental rehabilitation programme to restore the mined dunes to their natural state after mining.


To supervise the shift teams and control the instrumental analysis process, mine development boreholes samples, final products and development samples andhold the overall responsibility of Physical laboratory over the weekend and after hours.


  • Ensure accuracy, productivity and optimal availability of instrumentation and analysis.
  • Regular communication with shifts, plant and production regarding interpretation of results and values.
  • Collection of samples from different plants, liaise with plant control room for non availability of samples at sampling point.
  • Ensure equipment integrity is maintained according to safety standards.
  • Manage available resources in terms of staff and equipment.
  • Drive business excellence by supporting Six Sigma initiatives and all other continuous improvement projects.
  • Report low stock level of consumables and spares to Day crew supervisor.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and walkabouts to identify housekeeping needs ensuring safe and effective operations.
  • Conduct risks assessments and monthly safety meetings.
  • As authorized person Issue permits to work and ensuring compliance with physical lab. Lockout procedures
  • Ensure effective service through regular liaison and communication with Superintendent, Lab and clients.
  • Ensure full understanding and use of validation and manual release functions.
  • Review production data before and after the shift.
  • Conduct disciplinary hearings and attend to Employee Relations-related problems.
  • Manage available resources in terms of staff and equipment.
  • Ensure training and development of subordinates to optimize performance.Supervise and control quality of all results produced by the shift through monitoring control charts

    College / University Education : Matric (with Maths & Science)

    5-10 years production experience as a Routine analysts or Laboratory analyst, of which 2 years must be at least in a supervisory position


  • Computer literacy : MS Office and SAP (Advanced knowledge).
  • Thorough understanding of process flow, equipment operations and operational principles in the process area.
  • Risk assessments and management.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of all relevant mining software.
