Senior Lecturer - Department of Statistics FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCESDEPARTMENT OF STATISTICSSENIOR LECTURERStatistics is a base discipline and is offered as such by the Department of Statistics at the University of Pretoria.

Programmes in Statistics and Mathematical Statistics are presented in the Faculties of Natural and Agricultural as well as Economic and Management Sciences.

Service courses in Statistics are presented as components of various other programmes in different faculties.Statistics is a professional discipline and is practiced through research and research-

related consulting activities. Research consultation is offered by the Department to industry and to the broader university.

Through these activities the core components of the discipline are strengthened, positioning the Department at the forefront of teaching, research and the practice of Statistics.

The Department of Statistics has a Research Chair in nonparametric, robust statistical inference and statistical process control and the successful candidate in this position will be required to bring his / her skills to enhance this niche area within the Department.

Technology significantly transformed the availability of information and data, andsho w advance analytics allows for an in-

depth understanding of patterns in data, making automation of many manual processes possible. Statistical training programmes should include the latest knowledge, modern statistical thinking, partnership with industry, combined with core fundamental principles and scientific foundations.

Enhancement of the current teaching programme that incorporate data science components is expected from the incumbent.The incumbent will have an academic mandate of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, supervising Honours, Masters and PhD students.

The research mandate requires an active research programme, producing accredited academic research outputs, conference presentations and consultation practice.

It will also be expected from the incumbent to raise research funds and build a strong internationally acclaimed research programme.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES : The successful incumbent will be responsible for : Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses;Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students;
  • Actively conducting independent and collaborative research within statistical process control area and the research outputs must be published in accredited journals;
  • Conducting statistical consultations and support on research projects from other departments within the University;Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
  • Expanding collaboration with academics internationally;Initiating and delivering specialist courses at national and international levels;
  • Participating in administrative duties within the Department.No application will be considered after the deadline, or if it does not comply with at least the minimum requirements.

  • Proven experience of at least two years is required in : Teaching at undergraduate and / or postgraduate levels;Teaching of large student groups;
  • The application of an array of statistical techniques, statistical model building and statistical programming;Statistical consultation and practice;
  • The application and use of advanced statistical and mathematical software packages;Excellence in software programming and data management across different operating system platforms.

    In addition to the minimum requirements for the position Senior Lecturer, the candidate should also innovative, creative thinking ability and proactively present new ideas onsho w to expand the teaching capacity, research capacity and industry partnerships of the Department.

  • REQUIRED COMPETENCIES SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES : Recognised by peers as a scholar with high academic standing;
  • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of publications in academic journals in the relevant field of Statistics / Mathematical Statistics, with evidence of publications in Statistical Process Control SPC area;
  • Evidence of industry experience and statistical application in industry;Evidence of papers presented at international conferences.

  • ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES : Evidence of industry-application of SPC in the energy, engineering and financial sectors would be a recommendation to foster industry partnership;
  • An inclination towards modern Statistical thinking and algorithmic data analysis.The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
