Role purpose :

The responsibilities include the monthly completion of all Excise / Customs and VAT returns for submission to SARS, prompt payment of all Indirect Taxes and performing all reconciliations relating to the indirect Tax GL accounts.

Support provided to the reporting function in order to deliver the reporting outputs. Maintaining Excise (ED) SAP module.

Changes in the way of working, requires systems and process improvements to ensure the proper accounting treatment of all / indirect Taxes.

The incumbent is required to facilitate and support the required process improvements as the needs are identified and ensure that accounting records correctly reflect the liability and expenses relating to Indirect Taxes.

The jobholder will take responsibility for the accuracy of reconciliations and submission to SARS. Principal accountabilities :

  • Prepare all BATSA owned companies indirect tax monthly returns for review and approval.
  • Prompt submission of all monthly VAT and Excise returns.
  • Prompt payment of all indirect taxes due to SARS.
  • Raise appropriate accounting entries to reflect the Excise and VAT liability and expense in SAP.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations for review and approval.
  • Maintain positive relationship with the SARS Customs and Excise Division.
  • Check the accuracy of documents received from the various departments and compliance in respect of the Customs and Excise Act.
  • Verification of import and export summaries against SAD 500 documents and reconcile SAP report against summaries.
  • Manually verify timing of movements to establish correct compliance with SARS regulations.
  • Provide details of treatment of irregularities in terms of the Customs and Excise Act to management.
  • Provide solutions for irregularities in terms of Customs and Excise Act to management for review.
  • Drafting of letters to the SARS in respect of irregularities / extensions / notifications / destructions / payments / penalties.
  • Provide technical assistance in respect of SAP system upgrades and SAP development in respect of the management of ongoing irregularities.
  • Liaison with factory, SARS, consultants and other BAT departments to ensure accurate and timeous information updates are received to meet the required submission deadlines.
  • Check BAT import and export returns for technical errors and request vouchers of correction from freight department / factories where required.
  • Preparing and submitting customs registration / de-registration documents in respect of SARS incentives.
  • Completion of ad-hoc tasks given through by line management.
  • Emergency back-up for Corporate Finance Analyst : Customs 470.03.
  • To be progressively trained for the role of Corporate Finance Analyst : Customs 470.03.
  • Knowledge :

  • B Comm. Degree or indirect tax qualification.
  • Essential requirements :

  • Minimum 3- 5 years working experience in tax or similar environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel with relevant advance qualifications.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft word.
  • SAP (FI, MM, SD, CO, & PA modules).
  • Knowledge of SARS E-filing system.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Would be a plus :

  • Experience at SARS.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Basic understanding of Value Added Tax legislation.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Team player.
