The Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town seeks to fill a permanent academic position in organic chemistry at the level of Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer.

We seek to strengthen the department’s teaching of organic chemistry and research in synthetic organic chemistry, with possible application to the current research themes in the department : Chemistry for Health in Africa and Chemistry for a Sustainable Future.
Requirements include : For appointment at Associate Professor Level : A PhD in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and / or synthetic medicinal chemistry or related field and at least 6 years relevant experience, with at least three years at a senior level An excellent track record of publication in peer reviewed journals as corresponding senior author, with a significant number in high quality journals.
A successful candidate must be an established researcher with a sustained recent record of productivity in the field and some evidence that they enjoy international recognition.
Experience in teaching organic chemistry at undergraduate level with evidence of teaching excellence and a contribution to curriculum development.
Applicants from non-academic institutions must show evidence of conducting staff training in respect of seminars, courses, and workshops.
A solid track record of supervision of PhD and MSc students to graduation or evidence of mentorship and training of junior researchers.
A track record of raising research funding. For appointment at Senior Lecturer level : A PhD in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and / or synthetic medicinal chemistry or related field, with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience.
A track record of independent research, including supervision and publications. Success in securing external research funding would be advantageous.
Significant teaching experience at university level, or equivalent. Experience in curriculum development would be advantageous.
Responsibilities include : Develop a strong research programme, preferably in the area of synthetic organic chemistry as applied to Health in Africa and a Sustainable Future.
Develop and teach courses in the sub-discipline of organic chemistry at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service courses) and give specialist lectures at the Honours (4th year) level.
At the Associate Professor level, the successful candidate must have the vision and experience to oversee the full organic chemistry curriculum and provide direction within the discipline.
Supervise Honours, MSc and PhD students. Contribute to administration in the Department and Faculty of Science.
