Summary of South Africa Head of Finance Role

LGC is seeking to appoint a replacement Head of Finance for our South Africa business in Kyalami to lead and direct the activities of the South Africa Finance function in delivering first class standards of financial planning, analysis, reporting, financial control and compliance.

Financial Reporting

Manage overall finance and accounting function.Deliver monthly Financial Reports for internal and external purpose and ensure that reporting is compliant with IFRS, LGC Group Accounting Policies and South African Accounting GAAP.

Oversee day to day financial operations (transaction processing, payments, controls, reporting, budgeting, forecasting) of the business related to South Africa commercial activity (Reference Materials and Proficiency Testing businesses), interacting with LGC sites in the UK, USA and Germany supplying the South Africa business.

Oversight and ownership of complex accounting matters including but not limited to revenue recognition (in terms of IFRS15), deferred revenue adjustments, and local intercompany transactions between legal entities.

Interact with Group teams to develop and maintain systems (Pastel, IFS, Business Objects) for efficient and effective financial control, transaction processing, management reporting and compliance.

Planning and Analysis

Leading the South Africa annual budget and quarterly forecasting for full P&L, working capital and CapEx, partnering with the local management team and global sector leads.

Support the South Africa commercial and operations teams and Divisional Finance teams through the provision of excellent management information and advice on commercial and operational matters, including financial inputs into contract proposals and tenders, investment appraisals and project work.

Provide variance analysis and commentary to explain monthly results versus budget, forecast and prior year, partnering with the commercial and operations teams.

Prepare / review / report monthly management accounts for both the Industrial Analytical (Reference Materials & Proficiency Testing) and Thistle Laboratory Services (Clinical Proficiency Testing) businesses.

Support local M&A projects where applicable.

Finance Control

Maintain and develop high quality accounting and internal control systems to ensure the integrity of financial statements and the protection of company assets.

Oversight of monthly payroll processing.Optimize financial procedures to be fit for purpose for the growing business through a dedication to continuous improvement, leveraging relationships with Divisional and Group Finance and IT teams.

Finance and operational process automation in collaboration with Local, Divisional and Group Operations, Finance and IT teams.

Tax, Insurance & BEE compliance

Review annual tax filings in collaboration with local auditors and tax advisers.Perform monthly VAT and PAYE return submissions.

Liaise with external financial institutions including banks, auditors and SARS.Ensure compliance with local tax regulations to minimize tax exposures.

Prepare annual insurance renewal package.Lead the annual BEE verification process and ensure updated certification is achieved for 2 operating entities in collaboration with the local BEE consultant.


People management for the South Africa Finance team of 5 individuals.Building and developing a high-performing finance team through challenge, coaching and review.

Set and monitor individual and team objectives to elevate performance levels.Provide coaching and mentoring support to team members and identify development needs and desired outcomes.

Member of the South Africa Senior Management team, engaging and advising on all matters impacting business performance.Lead co-ordination of work between the local teams and corporate functions on systems infrastructure improvements including site maintenance, ERP etc.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience in a senior finance role, preferably within a multinational company in South Africa.
  • CA(SA) Qualification (registered with SAICA).
  • Excellent communicator who is able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels locally and internationally.
  • Strong technical accounting skills required including accounting for complicated business transactions.
  • Finance team leadership and development experience
  • Experience with ERP and MI systems (SAP, Oracle, IFS, Business Objects) required.
  • Experience reporting into an international Division or Group structure
  • Skillful in developing and building successful working relationships with internal stakeholders and senior management locally and internationally.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Excellent planning skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and levels of complexity.
  • High level of attention to detail, technical and analytical skills.
