The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader and coach for the Agile Release Train (ART).

The Release Train Engineer’s major responsibilities are to facilitate the major events and processes pertaining to the operation of the ART, and assist the teams in delivering value.

The RTEs do this by leading the Scrum Masters and Product Owners on the ART to deliver on the PI Objectives. Release Train Engineers communicate, and ensure alignment with stakeholders.

They also escalate impediments that they cannot resolve, help manage risk, and drive continuous improvement.

In the absence of a Program Manager or other financial tracking team member, the RTE will be responsible for managing all financial and budget related items both internally and externally to clients, vendors and suppliers.

  • Personal Attributes :

  • Stakeholder management Must be able to engage with various stakeholders with confidence. Takes responsibility for stakeholder management for the ART.
  • Advanced communication Must be able to communicate (verbal and written) confidently and credibly. Delivers a message with tact.
  • Is sensitive to how the message is received by the team or by management.

  • Lean-Agile mindset Must have a Lean-Agile mindset in addition to the organisation skills to perform daily duties. Understands the foundations of Agile and SAFe and embraces an Agile mindset.
  • Is able to teach Agile and demonstrates Lean-Agile principles as outlined in SAFe with a concentration on systems thinking.

  • Servant Leader Must be motivational and inspirational servant leaders who is able to transition from directing and managing activities to providing the support needed by the teams on the ART to be self-
  • organising and self-managing. Listen and support teams in problem identification and decision-making. Creates an environment of mutual influence.

    Understands and empathises with others. Encourages and supports the personal development of each individual and the development of teams.

    Persuades rather than using authority. Thinks beyond the day-to-day activities. Serves the SM community as the primary escalation contact and is ready to do whatever it takes to keep the train rolling.

  • Influencer as this is a senior role, the RTE must be an advocate of the Lean Agile mindset and ensure the adoption of the SAFe framework and relevant principles at all relevant organizational levels.
  • Negotiator due to the servant leadership requirements of this role, the RTE must be able to successfully resolve any team and ART issues while minimizing the requirement to escalate beyond the team boundaries.
  • Understands that most things are not black and white. Negotiates with stakeholders to achieve an agreement that is palatable to all parties involved.

  • Assertive where necessary, the RTE will need to ensure adoption of, and adherence to the SAFe and related Lean-Agile principles as well as any other Dimension Data specific governance requirements.
  • Facilitator Must be able to facilitate the PI Planning events and processes, and assist the teams in delivering value.
  • Comfortable presenting to the team and management. Possesses an arsenal of tools and techniques to keep participants interested and engaged.

    Nurtures the team’s understanding of Agile principles and practices through the use of workshops, Agile games and presentations.

  • Enthusiastic Must be high-energy, engaging and have a positive disposition.
  • Continual improvement Must continually be growing own professional skills, including learning new tools and techniques to manage self and a team.
  • This is in addition to personal training, education and growth.

  • Conflict resolution Must be able to facilitate discussions to allow the team to plan and bring disagreements into the open to help resolve conflict.
  • Work Outputs

    Steer Agile Release Trains :

    The RTE is a servant leader and coach for the ART. Their major responsibilities are to facilitate the major events and processes, and assist the teams in delivering value.

    They communicate with stakeholders, escalate impediments, help manage risk, and drive continuous improvement. Although (ARTs) are composed of self-

    organising and self-managing teams, the RTE steers the ART in the right direction. They are typically experienced programme or development managers and operate most effectively as servant leaders.

    They have a solid grasp of how to scale Lean and Agile, and understand the unique opportunities and challenges associated with facilitating and continuously aligning a large development program.

    Facilitates Agile Release Train Processes and Execution :

    The RTE operates under the guidance and coaching of the Solution Train Engineer (STE) and facilitates the ART processes and execution, respectively.

    They will also participate in the Lean-Agile transformation, coaching leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in the new processes and mind-

    sets. They help configure SAFe to the needs organization, standardising and documenting practices. The RTE focuses on how to reach the goal and works closely with the Product Manager who determines the why and what.

    Coach and mentor :

    The RTE is focused on people stuff and will pay attention to team health, provide coaching and retrospective based improvement maps.

    They act as an organisational coach who is focused on guiding and developing the teams within their release train activity.

    He / she will coach the team to collaborate and allows the team to self-organise, assisting with fixing problems.

    Facilitate progress :

    This employee facilitates the Program Increment’s progress and creates success metrics for it. The focus is on the dashboard and the communication of progress to the various stakeholders they are required to interact with in the broader organisation.

    This individual will also facilitate corrective actions or PI commitment adjustments if these are required.

    Education required

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field
  • Certifications required

  • SAFe Release Train Engineer Certification
  • Other current SAFe certifications (e.g. SAFe Scrum Master, SAFe for Teams, etc)
  • Work experience required

  • Lean-Agile experience is advantageous
  • Demonstrable planning experience.
  • Relevant Agile coaching experience.
  • Experience working in Agile approaches, practices and service-oriented environments : (Scrum, XP, Kanban, Crystal, FDD, Design thinking, etc.)
  • Applicable knowledge of the technologies used by the team.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of product development in an ITC industry would be advantageous.
  • Deep grasp of the Scaled Agile Framework, solid understanding of budgeting concepts within a scaled agile environment
  • Understand fundamentals of iterative development.
  • Understand fundamentals of product / software development processes and procedures.
  • Understand the value of commitments to delivery made by a development team.
  • Understand incremental delivery and the value of metrics.
  • Understand backlog tracking, burndown metrics, velocity, and task definition.
  • Be able to relate to, and integrate with alternate development methodologies (e.g. waterfall).
  • Be conversant in DevOps practises and understand strong relationship and bi-directional dependency required with deployment teams.
  • Significant experience managing multiple teams and product roadmaps.
