A Medical Officer (Doctor) - (Principal Investigator) position is available at our client, WIts Health Consortium's PHRU Unit in Soweto.

Background

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-

positive women and their children.

In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development.

In addition the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.

The unit is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-

to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adult and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohort.

Main purpose of the job

To provide comprehensive medical care to participants of various studies related with prevention of infectious diseases, including HIV, HPV, influenza and tuberculosis vaccine clinical trials in humans.

Key performance areas

  • Participate in the entire process of clinical research with excellent documentation of work done on trials
  • Work with the study team in order to optimize research strategies
  • Provide and support clinical care of participants with a focus on customer service
  • Collaborate on new and ongoing studies
  • Assist with data-related issues
  • Participate in project meetings, conference calls and Continuous Medical Education
  • Supervision of staff
  • Required minimum education and training

    Medical Degree (MBCHB).

    Professional body registration

    Minimum work experience

    Minimum one year experience as a SAHPRA / MCC-approved sub-investigator on at least 3 trials.

    Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Cheerful, customer-oriented team-conscious attitude to service
  • Clinical skills that extend across the spectrum of well people and people living with HIV
  • Commitment to working in the paradigm of disease prevention
  • Competence and willingness to work with adults, adolescents and children
  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate in local languages advantageous
  • Scientific publication history or willingness to learn is advantageous
