Job Purpose

  • Production, distribution and rationalisation of reports to key committees
  • The role of Portfolio management is to develop and lead the analysis and reporting of credit risk within PBB Africa Regions
  • Engage and use analytics to further add insights into the key drivers of the portfolio performance.
  • Monitor and assess the risks that are inherent within the portfolio of assets across the Credit division.
  • Provide senior management and country with a constructive and holistic view of risk within the portfolio so as to assist management in the effective understanding and mitigation of risk and achieve the department’s strategic goals and objectives on parameter changes.
  • Serve as a primary resource of data, reports to both business and wider credit on how to effectively address portfolio performance
  • In this manner, support and coverage is provided across 15 African countries across each personal and business product.
  • Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

    Primary support includes preparation and analysis of risk reporting into various senior management forums such as :

    o PBB Governance Committee

    o PBB Credit Governance Committee

    o PBB Credit Risk Management Committee (CRMC)

    o Group Risk Oversight Committee (GROC)

    o Group Risk Capital Management Committee (GRCMC)

    o PBB Africa Regions Executive Committee (Exco)

    o Fitch and Moody’s

    o South African Reserve Bank (SARB)

    The key responsibilities include :

  • Preparation and briefing on portfolio performance to senior Credit and country teams for Risk Forums with countries
  • Offer support to manager responsible for credit portfolio management reporting
  • Proactively assisting the senior management of risk executive committee in achieving their strategic goals for risk
  • Assist in dealing with queries from Senior Management in PBB Credit and Group Risk.
  • Report on Weekly key risk issues to Senior management.
  • Ensure consistent accuracy and alignment regarding the metrics reported on the Portfolio reports from MI team as well as Credit finance
  • Production of key inputs which include the Credit Loss Ratio, Credit impairment charge, Early arrears, NPLs, Product margins and book balances.
  • Managing the portfolio per delinquency bucket
  • Monitoring of the roll rates between the delinquency buckets : roll forwards, roll backwards, cures and milling rates.
  • Report on the high-risk accounts and their respective mitigating actions to prevent deterioration in credit risk.
  • Provision of in-depth data analysis, trending, forecasting and reporting to provide meaningful management information to be used in the day-
  • to-day decision-making process.

  • Analyse and report on any underlying reasons for changes and shifts identified in the portfolio financials per country.
  • Engage countries in identifying the key drivers to the trends within the Portfolio via the Portfolio management actions
  • Provide analytical input to the Credit portfolio team in country and at Centre on a routine and ad-hoc basis with the view to find patterns in data.
  • Analysing the exchange rate impact on the portfolio; Local currencies (Africa Regions) vs. ZAR. This entails comparing the performance of each portfolio on a constant currency basis and the non-
  • constant currency to analyse the impact of the exchange rates on the portfolio.

  • Ensuring that all products are within acceptable Provision adequacy levels according to the policies set as well as the budget.
  • This also includes the Income Statement and Balance Sheet provisions.

  • Understand and monitor the monthly movements in the Balance Sheet and Income statement Provisions.
  • Analyse and report on the impact of the stresses that each country faces that might potentially impact the portfolio; this includes the macro-
  • economic and political factors

  • Assessing and monitoring concentration limits to offer Senior Management advice on the concentration Risk within the portfolio.
  • Part of the team that develops the material for Board training- join credit leadership in country to deliver training to the board and present specific modules on best practice credit (where needed in / requested from country)
  • Key partner in risk appetite and stress testing input for the Africa Regions framework.
  • Support reporting related to Risk appetite to countries in monitoring the Risk Appetite across the portfolio and incorporate the stress testing in the Risk Appetite Process
  • Offer support and rationale in Sensitivity analysis and Portfolio stress testing
  • Offers assistance with inputs to Business Scorecards to maintain the set targets.
  • Provide portfolio reports per product to the Business Heads e.g. VAF, Mortgage Advances, Credit Card, Term Lending and Overdrafts
  • Be able to present the portfolio performance trends to various product specific forums
  • Ability to meet reporting deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Constantly challenges established thinking and facilitate improvements in systems and processes.
  • Manage the direct reports and make sure that the team’s goals are aligned to the overall PBB Credit.
  • Managing and updating the database for the Economic groupings as well as cross border exposures between Africa Regions and other Standard Bank legal entities.
  • Alignment of Africa Regions reporting to Group Standards
  • Ensure that the Group standards are upheld.
  • Ensure that the policies such as written off accounts is adhered to always.
  • Report on material breaches in the portfolio to Senior Management
  • Analysing the residual and inherent risk of the key metrics that are tracked monthly. This includes, Credit Capabilities (processes, systems and people), Non-
  • Performing Loans, Credit Loss Ratio and Income Statement Impairment charge.

  • Incorporation of IFRS 9 methodology in the respective reports
  • Ad-hoc project work for various stakeholders as required.
  • Provide the report on Internal and External audit findings to Senior management.
  • Preferred Qualification and Experience


  • Minimum : Bachelor’s degree (3 years) with Honours ideally in the following discipline (Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Quantitative Analysis, Mathematics or Statistics);
  • Honours degree would be preferred
  • Experience

  • 3 - 7 years’ experience as a Portfolio Manager
  • 3- 4 years SAS / SQL skills
  • Credit background
  • Exposure to African countries would be ideal
  • Knowledge / Technical Skills / Expertise
