DescriptionBrief Description

The School of Literature, Language and Media is seeking to employ a sign language interpreter in the department of South African Sign Language (SASL).

Candidates should have a higher education degree, and have at least one year of experience in interpreting in a workplace environment.

A qualification in interpreting or evidence of good-quality training, and experience in educational interpreting, would be a recommendation.

Applicants should have :

  • Fluency in South African Sign Language and ability to sign clearly
  • Excellent English skills
  • Excellent interpreting skills and experience
  • Ability to follow the code of ethics of SASL interpreters
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Deaf community
  • A good understanding of academic language
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Qualifications required :

  • BA (or equivalent)
  • The successful applicant will be required to :

    1. Interpret for SASL staff members at meetings, seminars and other appointments, as well as assisting them to communicate with students

    2. Interpret lectures, tutorials, and other course activities for Deaf students registered with SASL department

    3. Check language accuracy of the official documents and correspondences produced by Deaf staff members, and edit accordingly

    4. Taking and making phone calls on behalf of Deaf staff members

    Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.
