Summary : The Head of Research will manage the policy & research within the organisation. The Head of Research reports directly to the Managing Director (MD).

Qualifications required :

  • Master’s degree in policy research, social sciences / economics or development management is essential.
  • Experience required :

  • At least a minimum of 8 years’ experience within research field;
  • 5 years’ experience in the heading / managing the research unit and interacting
  • at Executive and Board levels;
  • A strong thinker on development, economic or social science issues, with a proven track record in producing and overseeing high quality, published research;
  • A broad-based understanding of the major economic, social development, governance and socio economic transformation in the Southern Africa region;
  • Experience in managing other researchers and research projects (including managing commissioned researchers), ensuring high standards of delivery;
  • Thorough understanding of research methodologies and skills with an ability to train / coach and transfer skills to others;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, with an ability to simplify complex concepts both verbally and orally in order to influence others;
  • Strong understanding of and proven commitment to the organisation’s mandate.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Key responsibilities :

  • Develop, implement and review the research policy;
  • To provide effective Policy & Research papers that meet high standards;
  • To coordinate with Policy & Research Committee and Provincial research teams on the delivery of agreed annual research priorities and provide support in managing commissioned research as agreed;
  • To monitor influential research produced by others researcher / institution (e.g. Cosatu, Solidarity, World Bank, UN, NGOs) relevant to the organisation’s interest and provide timely written critiques and responses;
  • Lead desktop or field research using approved methodologies / techniques appropriate to area of research and complying with the research policies;
  • Prepare research proposals for approval prior commencement of research;
  • Manage project and programs delivered by the Policy & Research Committee
  • Develop and continuously review all other company policies and procedures in relation to Policy & Research implications;
  • To give strategic direction to the organisation’s provincial leadership participation at critical research forums;
  • To forge innovative partnerships with key think-tanks, specialist researchers, academic and research institutions and draw in external expertise for the organisation’s research work;
  • To ensure that all the ’s public research briefs in Southern Africa meet the highest standards;
  • To work and collaborate effectively with other key staff;
  • To help develop research proposals and concept notes for fund raising;
  • To act as a focal point for the organisation-based Policy & Research team in order to maximise synergies between various stakeholders;
  • To manage all research initiatives;
  • To oversee the setting of, management of and adherence to budgets for commissioned research.
