Brief Description

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies of the University of the Witwatersrand seeks to make an appointment at the level of Associate Lecturer (to start in January 2023).

This is a fixed-term, three-year position that can be converted to a permanent appointment on condition that a PhD is attained by the successful candidate.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Facilitate the learning processes in the Department by developing, teaching and coordinating courses in the postgraduate programme.

Postgraduate teaching and curriculum development, in one or more of the following areas :

  • Theory of interpreting
  • Interpreting models
  • Modes and types of interpreting
  • Conference interpreting
  • Intersectionality of interpreting
  • Institutional interpreting
  • Support postgraduate research and supervision in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Honours and masters’ level.
  • Design teaching and learning content, perform assessments, develop curricula and carry out administrative tasks.
  • Contribute towards transformative pedagogies and innovation within the Department.
  • Contribute to the work of the Department and the School as a whole, such as actively engaging in committee work.
  • Conduct research and contribute to creative outputs.
  • Develop and maintain national engagement / research / creative outputs.
  • CORE COMPETENCIES

    Expert knowledge of language practice specialised to interpreting.

    Expert knowledge of interpreting with particular emphasis on the South African context and its interface with the Global South.

    Ability to contribute substantively to the transformation / Africanisation / decolonization of interpreting studies curricula.

    Significant experience of techniques, processes, technologies and production as it pertains to interpreting practices.

    Ability to develop and innovate course content to keep programmes relevant and current.

    Ability to offer of a variety of teaching and learning methodologies at postgraduate level.

    Computer literacies commensurate with the requirements of all forms of lecture delivery and academic administration.

    Evidence of an ongoing contribution to knowledge creation in the discipline through current publishing, proof of publication outputs in national and international DHET accredited journals and / or an interpreting practice record on national and international level.

    Evidence of ongoing creative practice and national / international engagement.

    Engagement practice and networks through liaison with professionals, peers and the interpreting industry.

    Experience of initiating and contributing to community engagement and community engagement programmes in interpreting.

    Excellent track record of interpreting practice on national and international level in a variety of settings with weighting given to specific high-level conferences.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for appointment to this post, candidates must hold a Masters degree and be registered for a PhD with a research focus that has relevance to the field of Interpreting.

    Further, they must have at least three to five years of industry experience at national and international level (detailed in an interpreting portfolio) and / or some teaching and research outputs.

    Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on published WITS pay scales.
