ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY (FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES)

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities seeks to appoint an Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of the Western Cape.

This is one of the leading History departments on the continent, with a record of innovative research and teaching in the field of African History, Public and Virtual History, Gender and History, Forensic History, and Museum and Heritage Studies.

The successful candidate (Associate Professor) will be expected to :

  • conduct research and publish;
  • engage in teaching and administration of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • supervise postgraduate students;
  • provide academic leadership;
  • lead curriculum development and revision;
  • serve in faculty and university committees;
  • contribute to the intellectual and administrative life of the department; and engage with the broader community.
  • The successful candidate (Senior Lecturer) will be expected to :

  • conduct research and publish
  • engage in teaching and administration of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • supervise postgraduate students;
  • serve in faculty and university committees;
  • contribute to the intellectual and administrative life of the department; and engage with the broader community.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Minimum requirements : Associate Professor

  • a PhD in History or related discipline;
  • an established research profile and quality peer-reviewed publications;
  • a record of successful and innovative teaching In African History;
  • recognised academic leadership record;
  • record of successful postgraduate supervision at Master's level, whilst a record of supervision at Doctoral level would be advantageous; and
  • evidence of expertise, national standing and an international presence in his / her field of research.
  • Minimum requirements : Senior Lecturer

  • a PhD in History or related discipline;
  • an established research profile and quality peer-reviewed publications;
  • evidence of successful postgraduate supervision at Master's level would be advantages.
  • Added Advantages :

  • expertise in African History beyond South Africa and / or African precolonial history;
  • expertise in Museum and Heritage Studies and / or curatorship;
  • multi-disciplinary training in the Humanities.
