Job Purpose :

  • To take responsibility as Parent Account Manager or Support Banker for a number of relationships with South African corporate clients
  • To work as a partner with the Investment Bank, Risk and relevant product teams across the firm, to deliver the best that Citi can offer
  • To build increased momentum and higher market share in both annuity and episodic revenues
  • To develop strong relationships with clients and to be viewed internally and externally as a specialist in the industry sector
  • Pursue trusted adviser status i.e. be the bank which receives the first call
  • To help develop junior talent in the Corporate Banking team and more widely in the South Africa branch
  • Job Background / Context :

  • The Corporate Bank, South Africa, is the relationship management team for the South African parented top tier local corporate clients in various sectors including metals and mining, telecoms and media, retailers, general industrials, financial institutions and non-
  • bank financial institutions, and Government and public sector

    Key Responsibilities :

  • Manage and grow relationships with certain key corporate clients within the existing portfolio
  • Identify and onboard appropriate new target market clients
  • Fully dimension clients’ needs and wallet, and identify incremental opportunities for Citi to deliver value
  • Anticipate clients’ needs by closely following news flow and maintaining a close dialogue with key contacts
  • Convert ideas into action by involving relevant internal partners and presenting tailored and compelling proposals
  • Maintain close contact with clients throughout execution / implementation phase to ensure seamless service
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in the core product set to explore and refer opportunities
  • Ensure Citi’s revenue, cross-sell, capital management and relationship returns objectives are met
  • Work with Global Portfolio Management team to manage the portfolio and individual client risk
  • Ensure proper control and monitoring standards are maintained across the client base
  • Coach and train junior team members to instil best practices and promote teamwork

  • Qualifications

  • Corporate Banking background (gained from a reputable firm where you will have had first class training and development as a banker) will be advantageous
  • Educated to degree level with a minimum grade of 2 : 1 (or equivalent experience)
  • Degree in related discipline may be advantageous
  • Knowledge / Experience :

  • In-depth industry and broad product experience
  • Have marketed a wide range of financing and transactional products to OECD clients, and been involved in their execution
  • Have been responsible for multi-client coverage
  • Have been responsible for meeting a budget on a portfolio of clients
  • Skills :

  • Analytical - assimilating new information quickly and relating it to the needs of the client base. Strong grounding in credit analysis
  • Organisational - managing business across a large client portfolio with diverse client teams
  • Verbal and written - ability to communicate accurately and concisely, and adapt style to a wide range of internal and external audiences
  • Understanding of bank and client tolerances and ability to negotiate to satisfy both
  • Competencies :

  • Interpersonal skills - ability to create and sustain good personal contacts within the client group, balancing client requirements and Citi’s priorities.
  • Confident in meeting clients at a senior level

  • Team player - being able to work in partnership with other individuals on day-to-day and long term projects
  • Work ethic - high energy level, self-starter, willing to go the extra mile to ensure work is completed to a high standard
  • Judgement - knowing when to take the initiative and when to escalate issues
  • Networking - maintaining close contact with product and risk specialists within Citi
  • Anticipation and innovation - ability to spot opportunities and develop new ideas to fill them and keep Citi ahead of the competition;
  • and equally ability to spot early warning signs of problem credits

    Should the Business Head and HR deem there to be high potential candidates who do not fully meet the inherent requirements of the role the candidate may be considered for the position, provided they have certain skills and experience which are closely related to the role.

    In the exceptional cases where we hire a more junior candidate, HR may require to bring in the candidate at the appropriate grade than the one advertised to maintain internal equity.

    In these cases the Business and HR will work together to determine a formal developments plan for the candidate to get them up to the appropriate grade.

    Exceptional candidates who do not meet these criteria may be considered for the role provided they have the necessary skills and experience.
