Job Knowledge

Skills and Experience

  • A relevant PhD degree (e.g., Applied Linguistics; Language and Education; Language Practice or an equivalent)
  • Five (5) years teaching in higher education as well as evidence of research publications relevant to the focus of this post.
  • At least 3 years relevant experience in Higher Education including advanced language practice and language policy development
  • Proficiency to teach in English and isiXhosa or Afrikaans as a language practitioner
  • Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

  • An Institutional Language Coordinator to take leadership, oversight and management of the various language development and implementation processes
  • To ensure alignment of the CPUT Language Policy with DHET requirements and with the relevant legislation and relevant institutional documents
  • To ensure that the existing language of instruction facilitates teaching and learning in an inclusive manner.
  • Develop a strong research focus in language development within the South African UoT context
  • Identify multi; inter and trans-disciplinary, collaborative partnership opportunities internally and externally on a national, regional and international basis
  • To promote a multilingual environment that recognises CPUT’s unique African identity and historical injustices
  • To recognise the urgency of the decolonisation of knowledge production, predominantly through language.
  • Explore third stream income generating opportunities through language development and or services
  • Monitor and evaluate implementation language policy implementation across the institution;
  • Coordinating implementation of budget and ensuring expected outputs are delivered within established budgetary constraints;
  • identifying funding opportunities and coordinating project proposal preparation
