PURPOSE OF THE JOBSupport the Technical and Business Development team with domain expert knowledge on process control systems to drive the development of process control system software standards in support of strategic objectives through improved access to relevant data, process control and reliability of control systems.

Ensure customer and supplier satisfactionLead process control system projects Digital transformation : Work with stakeholders throughout the organisation to identify opportunities for leveraging our control system infrastructure to support digital transformation initiatives.

Assess the effectiveness of existing OT network infrastructure with regards to integrity.Focus and priority areas to be guided by Corporate Strategy but opportunity for improvement is envisioned across all the major business areas and self-initiated opportunity identification will be encouragedEnhancing data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systemsProactively seek ways of improving process control system software across the business in areas such as asset management, energy, process control, product quality and production performance.

Provide input and guidance where control system hardware and software changes at Business Units are requiredSupport to Automation and Mechanisation team : Coordinate with different functional teams to implement control strategies and monitor outcomesDevelop processes and tools to monitor and analyse control strategy performance and data accuracyLead the alarm lifecycle management process across all business units.

Lead standardisation in terms of process control systems, including architecture, hardware, software, and block library.Develops standards, procedures, and guidelines for automation.

Develop and document Samancor Chrome standard software block library where required.Where work is outsourced, provide guidance with regards to scope of work, deliverables, risk assessments, management of change and acceptance testing.

Project Management : Clearly define scope of work, milestones, and expected outcomes for contractor work within the group.

Accurately evaluate delivered work for completeness and performance against specifications and standardsInterface with business units and external contractors with regards to implementation of automation projects on mining and smelter operations.

Interface with other engineering disciplines to establish how process control system can be utilised to aid in achieving their objectives.

Training : Ensure compliance to standards through coaching and training of automation personnel.Assist Samancor with knowledge sharing and training initiatives across its Business Units to familiarise operational teams with fundamentals of Process Control Systems, Instrumentation and Automation.

Be a mentor for Graduates in Training, developing them to become future Automation EngineersAssist with developing training modulesProvide specialist technical advice / assistance to customers and team membersWORKPLACE COMPETENCIES : Skills : Excellent understanding of PLC, Network and Fieldbus protocols.

Expert level understanding of Siemens PCS 7 (10+ years hands ) Experience with Siemens PCS7 software standards migrationExperience with Virtualisation and Hypervisors for Process Control SystemsAlarm Philosophy Development and Alarm RationalisationGood scripting and programming skillsExperience with formal software development lifecycles.

Proficiency in using query languages such as SQLKnowledge : Understand the principles of the mine to smelter value chain, and the impact of process control system software can have on the interlinked processes.

Analysing problems or data that requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factorsAdvanced Siemens PCS 7 (essential)Process Data Historians (Aspen IP21, OSIsoft PI)Knowledge of Mining and Smelting ProcessesKnowledge of ISA S88 / S95, 99, and 18.
